Warm vs. Cool Light: The Honest Guide to Table Lamp Bulbs
The lamp sets the stage. The bulb decides the mood.
You can buy the most beautiful table lamp in the world and ruin it with the wrong bulb. Here is everything you actually need to know — no physics degree required.
Kelvin: the colour of your light
Kelvin (K) tells you how warm or cool light looks. Lower is warmer:
- 2200–2700K — warm white. Candle-to-sunset glow. Perfect for living rooms and bedside lamps.
- 3000–3500K — neutral white. Clean but still friendly. Good for hallways and kitchens.
- 4000K+ — cool white. Focused and crisp. Desks and workspaces only — never the bedroom.
Lumens: the amount of light
Forget watts — lumens measure brightness. For a table lamp, 400–500 lumens is the sweet spot: enough to read by, soft enough to relax with. A desk lamp can go up to 800.
Dimmers: the cheapest luxury upgrade
A dimmable bulb turns one lamp into three: bright for tidying, medium for reading, low for winding down. If you buy one upgrade this year, make it this one.
Our house recipe for evening light:
2700K • around 450 lumens • dimmable LED • frosted glass. Warm, flattering, and it makes any shade — linen, ceramic or glass — look its best.
One last thing: the shade matters too
A white or linen shade spreads soft, even light. Darker shades push light up and down in dramatic pools — beautiful for mood, less ideal for reading. Match the bulb to the shade and the room does the rest.
