How to Choose the Perfect Table Lamp for Every Room
A lamp is never just a lamp. It sets the mood of a room before you even switch it on.
Choosing a table lamp feels simple — until you are standing in your living room wondering why the one you bought looks too small, too bright, or simply out of place. The good news: getting it right comes down to three things. Scale, light quality, and style. Here is how we think about each room.
The living room: layered and warm
Your living room needs more than one light source. A table lamp on a side table fills the gap between your ceiling light and the floor, softening shadows and making the room feel finished. Aim for a lamp between 60 and 75 cm tall — the bottom of the shade should sit at eye level when you are seated.
The bedroom: soft and low
Bedside lamps should relax you, not wake you up. Choose a warm bulb (2700K or lower) and a shade that diffuses light downward for reading without glare. If your nightstand is small, a slim base or a lamp with a built-in dimmer earns its place twice over.
The desk: focused and adjustable
For a workspace, function leads. An adjustable arm or angled shade directs light onto your work instead of into your eyes. Position the lamp on the opposite side of your writing hand to avoid shadows.
Quick rule of thumb: the lamp (base + shade) should be no more than 1.5× the height of the furniture it sits on. When in doubt, go slightly larger — undersized lamps are the most common styling mistake we see.
Match the lamp to your interior, not the other way around
Ceramic and linen shades suit calm, natural interiors. Metal and glass bring a sharper, more modern edge. If your room already has strong colours, keep the lamp neutral — if your space is neutral, a sculptural lamp is the easiest way to add character.
